Meghnaghat Power Station has started injecting over 273 megawatt (MW) electricity to the national grid, which is expected to help the authorities to keep the power supply stable largely at a time when the demand is shooting up with the rise in mercury.

“Meghnaghat Power Limited has officially resumed commercial operation of its Meghnaghat Power Station, initially on a simple cycle mode, with a generating capacity of 273.6 MW,” said Pendeiver Energy (L) Ltd., a subsidiary of Malaysia-Saudi based Powertek Energy, in a statement today.

The power station had been out of operation over a year as a fire burnt down a 150 MW steam turbine of Meghnaghat 450 MW combined cycle plant in April, 2014.

While inaugurating the resumption of power production of the plant, energy adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Tawfiq Elahi Chowdhury said there is nothing to be concerned about load-shedding during this summer because it will be possible to generate electricity ranging from 8,500 MW to 9,000 MW.

He said the power production has increased to a large extent over the last few years because the government has taken all-out measures to boost electricity generation to meet the increasing demand.

Chowdhury said the government has no plan to increase power tariff right now. “Power tariff is likely to be increased slightly in the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2015-16,” he added.

Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman of Power Development Board (PDB) Md. Shahinul Islam Khan and Director of Meghnaghat Power Limited Dato’ Mohd Nazri bin Shahruddin, among other, spoke on the occasion.
