3,600-MW LNG based power plant to be built at Payra

The government has undertaken another milestone project to set up a 3,600 megawatt (MW) power plant based on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at Payra in Patuakhali. 

North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) and Germany based Siemens AG are scheduled to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sunday in Dhaka in this regard. 

Prime Minister's Energy Adviser Towfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Chief Coordinator (SDG) of the Prime Minister's Office Md Abul Kalam Azad and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Thomas Prinz will attend the MoU signing ceremony at Bidyut Bhaban in the capital. 

"The NWPGCL and the Siemens AG will jointly finance the project," Director for Public Relation Department of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Chowdhury Saiful Hasan told BSS. 

According to the project details, the two companies will build the 3,600-MW power plant having three units with electricity generation capacity of 1,200-MW each. 

The companies will also construct the LNG terminal there for ensuring availability of necessary natural gas to generate electricity.
